Medicare Parts A & B Information

Medicare Parts A & B - Typically, if you are retired and attain age 65, you must enroll in Medicare Parts A & B. You may waive Part B, if you are actively employed beyond the age of 65, until you retire. Part A is automatic but you will pay a premium for Part B. If you do not elect Part B and do not qualify for delayed enrollment, you may be assessed a penalty by Medicare and have reduced claim payments by Excellus Blue Cross Blue Shield. It is your responsibility to notify us when you and/or your spouse turn 65 years old.

Medicare Disability Part B - If your spouse is receiving Medicare Part A due to a disability, he/she must enroll in Medicare Part B, whether or not they are 65 years old, once you retire from the district. There are very few exceptions of this law. Penalties and reduced claim payments may be assessed.

Actively employed past age 65 - If you are over age 65, actively employed and plan on retiring soon, you will need to apply for Medicare Parts A & B at least 30 days in advance of your retirement. Contact the Social Security Administration at 1-800-772-1213 for enrollment information.
